BRANT POINT WILDLIFE SANCTUARY CLEAN UP

Saturday, April 10, 10am-1pm

With NYC Parks and Jamaica Bay-Rockaway Parks Conservancy

Brant Point Wildlife Sanctuary, a wetland area of Jamaica Bay, was established as a protected area under the Buffer the Bay program, a joint effort by the Trust for Public Land and New York City Audubon. The goal of the late 1980s initiative was to reclaim land around Jamaica Bay in order to protect New York City’s largest and most vital natural marshland. Brant Point Wildlife Sanctuary is an integral part of the Buffer the Bay program: the area is home to dozens of species of birds, several of which are endangered migratory birds, making a brief stopover before they continue their journeys elsewhere. This makes Brant Point a critical place to keep clean and free of trash and debris, as it can severely hurt already dwindling species populations. Coastal habitats also protect low-lying communities from flooding and storm surges—protection that is ever more urgent in our warming world.

Join New York City Audubon, in partnership with New York City Parks and Jamaica Bay-Rockaway Parks Conservancy, in a morning and afternoon of beautifying the gem that is Brant Point Wildlife Sanctuary. Snacks, water, tools, and gloves all provided!
